The diesel engine (also known as a compression-ignition engine) is an internal combustion engine that uses the heat of compression to initiate ignition and burn the fuel that has been injected into the combustion chamber. This contrasts with spark-ignition engines such as a petrol engine (gasoline engine) or gas engine (using a gaseous fuel as opposed to gasoline), which use a spark plug to ignite an air-fuel mixture.

Perkins:Established in 1932, Frank Perkins and Charles Chapman were two men with little money but a big idea. Perkins was enterprising, imaginative and an aggressive salesman, while Chapman was an engineering genius.

From humble beginnings the company continued to grow with Chapman able to conceive revolutionary engineering solutions and Perkins able to exploit them with extraordinary vigour and market them to the world.Through continuous product and process development, with support from a sophisticated worldwide distributor network,Perkins has grown to become a leading supplier of diesel and gas engines in the 4-2000 kW (5-2800 hp) market.

The world’s first high speed diesel engine was Perkins’ four-cylinder Vixen, which made its debut in 1932, and in October 1935 Perkins became the first company to hold six world diesel speed records for a variety of distances, set at the Brooklands racetrack in Surrey.

Volvo Penta:Volvo Penta was founded in 1907 in conjunction with the production of the first marine engine. The Penta company soon became an established internal combustion engine manufacturer, which in 1927 delivered the engine for Volvo's first passenger car.Volvo acquired Penta in 1935 and Volvo Penta has been part of the Volvo Group since then. It now provides internal combustion engines (ICEs) and complete power systems to the boating industry, power-generating equipment, and similar industrial applications. The business also manufacturers sterndrive and inboard drive systems such as the Volvo Penta IPS.[1] The engine programme comprises petroleum fuel (diesel and petrol) engines with power outputs of between 7.5 and 1,500 kilowatts.

Deutz:Deutz AG is an engine manufacturer, based in Cologne, Germany.Deutz's head office is in the Porz district of Cologne and as of 2004 was manufacturing liquid and air-cooled diesel engines. The larger engines in the Deutz range were manufactured in Mannheim, at a production facility that once belonged to MWM International Motores. Deutz also have production facilities in other countries including Spain and a joint venture production facility in China. After Deutz took over, the plant specialised in marine engines. This facility now produces engines for marine and power generation which can run on either fuel oils or fuel gases (including landfill gas).

Doosan:Doosan Group is a South Korean conglomerate company. In 2009, the company was placed 471st in the Fortune Global 500.It has been included in the Forbes Global 2000 companies from 2007.It is the parent company of ŠKODA power. Doosan was ranked 4th among the “World’s Best 40 Companies 2009” list, released in the latest issue of BusinessWeek, the U.S. economics magazine in October 2009.
